Heartland Film Institute presents:
THE MAKING OF A SHORT FILM
with Kurt Kuenne
Thursday, January 29, 2009
IUPUI Campus Center
Join two-time Heartland Film Festival Crystal Heart Award-winning filmmaker Kurt Kuenne as he screens installments from his popular short film series, discusses the making of the films - from conception to completion - and the process of getting a film seen. Kuenne will answer questions on just about anything budding filmmakers might want to know about low budget production, the merits of making short films verses feature films, fiction verses documentary, and the world of film festivals. He will also discuss the emotional journey of making films, what it takes to keep going, the value of persistence and the all-important question of discovering what it is you have to say in the medium of cinema.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Kurt Kuenne is a filmmaker and composer of fiction and documentary films. He won a 2002 Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for his screenplay Mason Mule, while his screenplay Explode made the quarterfinals in the same year. An honors graduate of the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, Kuenne won the Harold Lloyd Scholarship in Film Editing. In 1999, following the completion of his first feature, he was named one of the top 25 new faces of indie film by Filmmaker magazine. His popular short film comedy series – Rent-A-Person, Validation, Slow and The Phone Book – has cumulatively played more than 90 film festivals, winning more than 35 awards. He is a two-time Heartland Film Festival Crystal Heart Award winner, for Validation (also winner of Vision Award for Best Short & the Audience Award in 2007) and Slow (2008). In addition to playing over 175 film festivals in his career thus far, Kuenne has also worked the other side of the festival rope as a documentary programmer for the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. His acclaimed documentary Dear Zachary: a letter to a son about his father was released theatrically by Oscilloscope Laboratories in the fall of 2008 and is currently in rotation on MSNBC.
